Without doubt, the two most promising Romanian juniors being groomed for glory in the 1985-1988 Olympic cycle were Daniela Silivas and
Raluca Bugner. Both girls debuted at the prestigious International Japan Junior
Invitational in 1983.
In 1984 Raluca competed at the
Moscow Stars and Riga International competitions, finishing a respectable and
consistent 6th AA at each and grabbing the bronze on bars at Moscow Stars. That year
would prove to be a fruitful one for Raluca. She went on to win the Avignon
International, place in the top ten at Junior Euros, and qualify to three of
four event finals at Junior Euros. The future seemed very bright for Raluca....
Sadly, Raluca vanished just as she began to prove herself. I presume she suffered a career ending injury, but I
have no confirmation of this. Although unable to compete herself, Raluca
redirected her talents towards judging, e.g., bars at the 1997 Romanian
Nationals, and coaching Romania's younger gymnasts. She
currently coaches at CSS Sibiu, home club of 2000 Olympian Claudia Presacan and 2000
Junior AA European Champion Sabina Cojocar.
Many thanks to Ioana Jadic for informing me of Bugner's whereabouts.
