Gabriela ("Gabby") Gheorghe was born on March 30, 1973. The junior
Romanian National champion in 1986, she enjoyed great success at her first
international outing, placing first with her team and second AA at the 1986
Balkan Games. She capped off the Games with top honours on beam and floor
exercise.
In 1987, her first year competing as a senior, Gabby traveled to England to compete in the Kraft International, placing
first overall and on beam and floor exercise. She just missed a berth to the
1988 Olympic team, serving as alternate.
Unlike many of
her Olympic teammates, Gheorghe continued gymnastics past Seoul. In 1989 she
competed in the Moscow News, just missing the medal podium (4th AA). She
retired shortly after, having been a member of the Romanian National Team for
five years (1985-1989) and honored as "Master of Sport" by the
Romanian Gymnastics Federation.
Like several former Romanian gymnasts, Gabby found success in Sports
Aerobics. She competed in Paris at the 1994 World Sports Aerobics Championships,
placing 12th in the women's individual event.
Gabby eventually left Romania to
pursue a coaching career in the United States, where she has coached at both Skyline Gymnastics Center LTD in York,
PA and Diamond Gymnastics in New Castle, Delaware. Coaches successes include a
1999 nomination for the Coach of the Year and coaching Kylah Bachman to 4th place on
beam and 10th AA at the 2001 J.O. Nationals (Level 10 Nationals).
Gabby is married to Virgil Ganescu. The couple have one son.
Note: In the late
1970s there was a Gabriela Gheorghe and a Gabi Gheorgiu who competed for
Romania. These are separate women from the one described above.
